Affective ties between people have suffered. The individual citizen has experienced an upheaval of the body, mind and the spirit. Pervasive conflict – intrinsic, interpersonal, organizational and social – has now become the order of the day. The corporate citizen spends a disproportionate amount of energy to contain these conflicts. This leads to the neglect of other priorities in life. In turn, it paves the way for the phenomenon of stress and distress. Prolonged stress adversely affects a person's overall sense of rationality and well-being. It takes a toll on one's physical, emotional, mental, intellectual and social health. Stories of promising lives and careers tragically cut short due to professional stress are now appearing in the media with unfortunate regularity.
